The Painting
A letter to David Newland, June 5th, 2005:
K,
You probably will wonder why I'm bothering to tell you this, but I thought it was interesting...
Anyway, what I was going to say is that whenever I was at your house, and I saw that painting that hangs in your living room, I would think to myself 'damn, that painting looks so familiar- I feel like I've seen it a million times!'. Originally I would put this down to pointless des ja vu, until this morning, at my parents house, I was going through a photo album, and I came upon some pictures of my brother and I doing an easter egg hunt at a friend of the family's house in St. Thomas (St. Thomas also happens to be the town I was born in >_<). Anyway, in one of the photos was none other than the same painting (or print?). It hung in their living room until the late eighties when they moved into an apartment, and I think they sold it at that point. It was a gorgeous, big, old house though, I remember that. Shit, I guess I should have put this in my photo blog.
Anyway, I don't know why I told you that, but for some reason, I thought it was interesting.
-Megan
Maybe it's not the same painting. Maybe it's only similar, maybe it's another copy of the same print (which is the most likely possibility), but I still find it ironic, since I saw the painting so many times as a child. Was this the only place I saw it? Maybe not. Maybe it's a common print. But it's funny how we can't always place where we've seen something, even if we've walked by it a million times. Our environment imprints upon us, but unfortunately we don't always consciously take note of it.
